5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN)

What is NTN? NTN is Non Terrestrial Network. The standard definition given by 3GPP is "a network or network segment that uses airborne or space vehicles to carry transmission equipment relay nodes or base stations." It sounds a bit awkward, but in simple terms, it is a general term for any network involving non ground flying objects, including satellite communication networks and High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPs).

It enables the traditional 3GPP ground network to break through the limitations of the Earth's surface and expand into natural spaces such as space, air, ocean, and land, achieving a new technology of "integration of space, space, and Haiti". Due to the current focus of 3GPP work on satellite communication networks, the narrow definition of NTN mainly refers to satellite communication.
There are mainly two types of non ground communication networks, one is satellite communication networks, including satellite platforms such as low Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), geostationary orbit (GEO), and synchronous orbit (GSO) satellites; The second is High Altitude Platform Systems (HASP), which includes aircraft, airships, hot air balloons, helicopters, drones, etc.

NTN can be directly connected to the user's mobile phone via satellite, and a gateway station can be set up on the ground to ultimately connect to the 5G core network. Satellites can serve as base stations to directly transmit 5G signals and connect to terminals, or as transparent forwarding nodes to transmit signals sent by ground stations to mobile phones.
BTF Tseting Lab can conduct NTN testing to help enterprises solve NTN testing/certification difficulties. If there are related products that require NTN testing, you can directly contact us.
