1、 Background and content of the announcement
Recently, South Korea has issued relevant notices to unify charging interfaces and ensure electromagnetic compatibility of products. The notice stipulates that products with USB-C port functionality need to undergo KC-EMC certification for the USB-C port in order for the entire machine to pass KC-EMC certification. This regulation aims to ensure that products entering the South Korean market comply with South Korea’s electromagnetic compatibility standards and avoid interference with wireless communication and other electronic devices.
2、 Implementation time and scope
2.1. Implementation time: This notice will be implemented from February 14, 2025, targeting most products such as mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, etc. Laptops will be implemented from April 1, 2026.
2.2. Product scope: including but not limited to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, earphones, portable electronic game controllers, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation devices, etc. Laptops will be included in the subsequent implementation scope.
3、 KC-EMC certification requirements
3.1. Certification body: The Radio Research Institute of Korea (RRA) is the main organization responsible for KC-EMC certification, responsible for testing, evaluation, and certification work.
3.2. Certification standards: KC-EMC certification follows a series of standards and specifications, which are typically aligned with international standards such as CISPR.
3.3. Certification process:
3.3.1 Preparation of materials and samples: Manufacturers need to prepare relevant technical information, test reports, and samples that meet the requirements of the product.
3.3.2 Pre testing: Prior to submission to RRA, the manufacturer may conduct pre testing in a third-party laboratory to ensure that the product meets KC-EMC’s requirements.
3.3.3 Formal testing: Submit the sample to RRA for formal testing, which usually includes testing on EMI (electromagnetic interference) and EMS (electromagnetic sensitivity).
3.3.4 Evaluation and Certification: RRA evaluates the product based on the test results, and if the product meets the requirements of KC-EMC, a KC-EMC certification certificate will be issued.
3.4. Certification fee: The cost of KC-EMC certification varies depending on various factors such as product type, certification agency, testing standards, etc. Usually includes testing fees, certificate fees, service fees, etc. The specific cost needs to be determined based on the laboratory’s quotation and the manufacturer’s requirements.
4、 Precautions
4.1. Timeliness: KC-EMC certification has timeliness, and manufacturers need to regularly update the certificate to ensure product compliance.
4.2. Compliance: Manufacturers need to ensure that their products meet KC-EMC’s requirements throughout their entire lifecycle, including design, production, sales, and other stages.
4.3. Market access: Obtaining KC-EMC certification is one of the necessary conditions for products to enter the Korean market, and manufacturers should fully understand and comply with relevant regulations and standards.
