The EU plans to ban the manufacture, import and export of seven types of products containing mercury

Major updates to Commission Authorisation Regulation (EU) 2023/2017:
1.Effective Date:
The regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 26 September 2023
It comes into force on 16 October 2023

2.New product restrictions
From 31 December 2025, the production, import and export of seven additional products containing mercury will be banned:
Compact fluorescent lamp with integrated ballast for general lighting(CFL.i) , each lamp cap ≤30 watts, mercury content ≤2.5 mg
Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) and External Electrode fluorescent lamps (EEFL) of various lengths for electronic displays
The following electrical and electronic measuring devices, except those installed in large equipment or used for high-precision measurements without suitable mercury-free alternatives: melt pressure sensors, melt pressure transmitters, and melt pressure sensors
Vacuum pump containing mercury
Tire balancer and wheel weights
Photographic film and paper
Propellants for satellites and spacecraft

3.Exemption:
These restrictions may be exempted if the said products are essential for civil protection, military use, research, instrument calibration or as a reference standard.
This amendment marks a crucial step forward in the EU's commitment to reducing mercury pollution and protecting the environment and human health.
