Vinyl acetate, as a widely used substance in industrial chemical product manufacturing, is commonly used in the production of packaging film coatings, adhesives, and plastics for food contact. It is one of the five chemical substances to be evaluated in this study.
In addition, vinyl acetate in the environment may also come from air pollution, cigarette smoke, microwave food packaging, and building materials. The public may be exposed to this chemical substance through various pathways such as respiration, diet, and skin contact.
Once listed as a hazardous chemical substance, companies must provide clear warning labels on their products to inform consumers and determine whether to purchase the relevant products.
The California Proposition 65 requires California to publish a list of hazardous chemicals, including carcinogenic, teratogenic, or reproductive toxic chemicals, and update it at least once a year. OEHHA is responsible for maintaining this list.Experts from the Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC) will review scientific evidence prepared by OEHHA members and public submissions.
If OEHHA includes vinyl acetate in its list, it will be required to comply with the relevant requirements of California Act 65 after one year. If warning signs are not posted in a timely manner, companies may face illegal lawsuits.
